TMJ Therapy & Sleep Apnea Devices

Evaluation and treatment for jaw pain, clicking and clenching, plus custom oral appliances for snoring and diagnosed sleep apnea.

Overview

TMJ Therapy & Sleep Apnea Devices at Monaco Dentistry

Jaw joints and airways are both dental territory more often than people expect. Morning headaches, a clicking jaw, flattened teeth and a partner complaining about snoring frequently share a root cause in how your jaw sits and moves at night. Dr. Sohi evaluates the joint, muscles and bite together, then treats with the least invasive option that works, usually a properly made custom appliance rather than anything irreversible.

Why it matters

What tmj therapy & sleep apnea devices gives you.

The whole picture assessed

Joint, muscles, bite and tooth wear examined together instead of treating one symptom in isolation.

Conservative first

Custom appliances, habit change and physiotherapy referral before anything that permanently alters your bite.

Teeth protected from grinding

A well-made nightguard absorbs forces that otherwise crack teeth and destroy expensive restorations.

A CPAP alternative worth trying

For diagnosed mild to moderate apnea, a mandibular advancement appliance is an option many people can actually stick with.

How it works

What to expect, step by step.

  1. History and examination

Pain mapping, joint and muscle palpation, range of movement, bite analysis and a review of tooth wear.

  2. Imaging where indicated

Panoramic or 3D imaging to look at joint anatomy and rule out other causes.

  3. Appliance or therapy

A custom nightguard, a repositioning splint, or a mandibular advancement device, made from your scan.

  4. Adjust and review

Appliances are tuned over a few visits. A device that is not adjusted is a device that does not work.

Who it's for

Is this you?

Patients with jaw pain or locking, clicking joints, tension headaches on waking, visibly worn or chipped teeth, night-time clenching, loud snoring, or an apnea diagnosis and CPAP intolerance.

Patient stories

What patients say.

“I had been waking with headaches for years and putting it down to stress. A custom nightguard changed my mornings within a fortnight.”
Nadia H. · White Rock
“I could not tolerate CPAP. The oral appliance I actually wear, which makes it better than the one I did not.”
Doug E. · South Surrey

Questions

TMJ Therapy & Sleep Apnea Devices: your questions answered.

Can a dentist really treat jaw pain?

Much TMJ pain is muscular and bite-related, which is squarely dental. Dr. Sohi evaluates the joint, muscles and bite, treats what is dental, and refers on for physiotherapy or specialist imaging when the picture points elsewhere. You get a diagnosis either way.

Is a drugstore nightguard good enough?

Rarely. Boil-and-bite guards are bulky, do not fit your bite, and can actually encourage more clenching. A custom guard is made from a scan of your teeth to a thickness and bite scheme chosen for your specific wear pattern.

Can an oral appliance replace my CPAP?

For diagnosed mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, a mandibular advancement appliance is a recognised alternative and is often far better tolerated. It is not a replacement for severe apnea. You need a sleep study and diagnosis first. We work alongside that, not around it.

How long before I feel a difference?

Many patients notice less morning tightness within two to three weeks of wearing an appliance nightly. Longstanding muscular pain takes longer and often benefits from physiotherapy alongside.
